TRIPOLI, Feb. 26 (Xinhua) -- The Libyan conference of national reconciliation kicked off Monday in Tripoli with over 100 tribal leaders and elders participating, under the slogan "security, peace, reconciliation."

The Minister of the Interior Abdassalam Ashour and the Minister of State for and Displaced People's Affairs, Yousuf Jalal, also attended the conference.

The two-day conference discusses importance of reconciliation and its role in the stability of Libyan society, as well as the role of the tribal leaders and elders in promoting reconciliation in Libya.

More than 40 academic pieces were presented in the conference by a number of experts and academics.

"The large number of elders and leaders of Libyan tribes from different cities in the east, south and west of the country reflects the awareness among the Libyans of the importance of reconciliation and overcoming differences to promote peace and security in Libya," Emhemmed Al-Busefi, head of the conference's preparatory committee, told Xinhua after the first session.

"The conference was preceded by preliminary meetings in a number of cities and regions," Al-Busefi added.

The tribal elders are highly respected in Libya. They contribute to social reconciliation efforts in the war-torn country.
