CAPE TOWN, March 31 (Xinhua) -- A female runner died on Saturday while taking part in the Two Ocean Marathon in Cape Town, organizers said.
The 43-year-old woman experienced complications while running on Southern Cross Drive before collapse, organizers said in a statement.
"Despite prompt and prolonged medical attention, the runner could not be resuscitated," Two Oceans Marathon General Manager Carol Vosloo said.
"We would like to extend our sincerest condolences to her loved ones, and also thank her fellow club members who gave up their own finish time to remain with, and assist her," Vosloo said, without giving further details.
The Two Oceans Marathon is a 56-kilometer ultramarathon and 21-kilometer half-marathon held annually in Cape Town on the Saturday of the Easter weekend.
Known globally as "the world's most beautiful marathon", the race is run against a backdrop of spectacular scenery through the Cape Peninsula.
This was the second sports incident involving the loss of life in one month.
On March 11, two participants died during this year's Cape Town Cycle Tour. One victim died when 20 cyclists were involved in a pileup, while the other died of a heart attack.
