ADDIS ABABA, April 12 (Xinhua) -- Ethiopia supports an impartial, transparent investigation into the alleged chemical attack in Douma, Syria, an Ethiopian official said on Thursday.

Speaking to Xinhua, Meles Alem, Spokesperson of the Ethiopia Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA), said Ethiopia, a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for 2017-2018, is ready to support resolutions that support impartial, transparent investigation into the alleged Syrian chemical attack.

"Ethiopia condemns chemical attacks as it was a previous casualty of chemical attacks itself in the hands of fascists, Ethiopia won't allow it to be repeated on any side," said Alem.

He was referring to the five-year occupation of Ethiopia by Italian fascist forces from 1936-1941, which witnessed Italian forces using poison gas against Ethiopian resistance fighters and civilians.

On April 7, activists said the Syrian government used chlorine gas while bombing Douma, the last rebel-held area in the Eastern Ghouta countryside of Damascus.

The Syrian government rejected the claims, denying being in possession of such weapons.
