BANGKOK, April 18 (Xinhua) -- Nearly 800,000 people have traveled by train during Songkran festival throughout the country, said a senior government official on Wednesday.

Acting State Railway of Thailand (SRT) governor Anon Luangboriboon said the SRT had provided a total of 235 train rides on daily basis to accommodate Songkran revelers during the seven-day festive season round the country.

The number of train passengers totaled 729,270 on April 11-17, up 16,343 passengers, or 2 percent, from the same period last year, the acting SRT governor said.

In regional terms, he said, the northeastern routes have accommodated 207,840 passengers, the southern routes have served 203,961 passengers, the northern routes 167,385 passengers, the eastern routes 84,368 passengers and Mae Klong route 65,716 passengers. April 12 saw the largest number of daily train passengers of 116,827.

Remarkably, no passengers had been stranded at any railway station nationwide, he said.
