RABAT, May 8 (Xinhua) -- Morocco and the European Union launched Tuesday in Rabat a program aimed at supporting Morocco's energy sector.

Funded by the EU with 1.15 million euros (1.36 million U.S. dollars), the 24-month program is part of the implementation of the program "Making a success of Advanced Status between Morocco and the EU."

The project seeks to support Morocco in achieving the objectives of its national energy strategy, such as security of supply, generalized access to energy, control of demand and environmental protection.

It aims to strengthen the capacities of the Moroccan Ministry of Energy, Mining and Sustainable Development in regulating electricity market, developing a mechanism to monitor the implementation of the energy strategy at national and regional levels, and improving the ministry's methods for long-term prospective energy analysis.

The project is also meant to enhance the capacity of the electricity management for investments in production and transport, modernize renewable management tools and energy efficiency, and support the regulatory convergence process in the areas of competence.
