NEW DELHI, May 9 (Xinhua) -- An earthquake on Wednesday shook Indian capital city New Delhi and Indian-controlled Kashmir, officials said.

According to Indian Meteorological Department, the earthquake measuring 6.1-magnitude occurred at 4:11 p.m. local time.

"The epicenter of earthquake was Afghanistan-Tajikistan Border Region, located at 36.9 degrees north latitude and 71.3 degrees east longitude," information released by Indian Meteorological Department said. "The depth of the earthquake was 96 km."

In Srinagar city and other major towns, the tremors forced people to rush out of buildings and houses.

"I was working on my desk and suddenly I felt the ground beneath me shaking," Lateef Ahmad, a Srinagar resident told Xinhua.

"In panic I rushed outside and I saw buildings, street light poles and trees shaking."

Reports said the tremors were felt in New Delhi also.

So far there were no reports of damage due to earthquake either in Indian-controlled Kashmir or New Delhi.
