PHNOM PENH, June 17 (Xinhua) -- A Cambodian man and a British woman took the honors in Sunday's Phnom Penh International Half Marathon.

Official results from the National Olympic Committee of Cambodia (NOCC) showed that Cambodian Ma Viro came home first in the men's race in one hour, 16 minutes and 30 seconds, while Britain's Jill Hamill triumphed in the women's race in a time of one hour, 29 minutes and three seconds.

NOCC President Thong Khon said some 5,500 professional and amateur athletes, including 519 foreign nationals from 39 countries and regions, took part in the event, adding that most of the overseas runners were from Japan, China and France.

"This event aims to celebrate the 82nd birthday of Queen Mother Norodom Monineath Sihanouk, and the proceeds will be donated to Kantha Bopha pediatric hospital," he said at the opening of the annual event, which was held in front of Phnom Penh's Royal Palace.

In addition to the main 21km run, there was also a 10km race and a 3km fun run competition at the charity event.
