SYDNEY, July 3 (Xinhua) -- A 21-year-old man has been arrested in Sydney, in relation to an illicit drug growing operation that has resulted in the seizure of more than 1 million U.S. dollars worth of cannabis.

Police raided three properties in the city's suburb on Tuesday, allegedly finding a total of 683 plants.

Arrested at one of the houses, the suspect was taken into police custody for questioning and will also undergo an immigration status check.

"It is disturbing to find these set-ups in quiet residential streets," commander of the South West Metropolitan Region Enforcement Squad, Detective Chief Inspector Gus Viera said.

The houses were reportedly wired illegally for sophisticated hydroponic cultivation of the cannabis plants.

"Illegal rewiring carried out to bypass the meter can quite easily cause a fire or electrocution, which poses a great risk to the community, especially their unsuspecting neighbors," Viera said.
