MOSCOW, Sept. 17 (Xinhua) -- Moscow regrets Ukraine's decision to end a key partnership agreement with Russia and will seek cooperation with "other, more responsible Ukrainian politicians," the Russian Foreign Ministry said Monday.

"In an effort to serve foreign geopolitical interests and their political ambitions, the Kiev authorities demonstrate their readiness to easily destroy all that has been accumulated over the years and decades, to tear the ties that have been built for generations by our common ancestors," it said in a statement.

Earlier in the day, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko signed a decree terminating the Treaty on Friendship, Cooperation and Partnership between Ukraine and Russia signed in 1997.

The ministry said that the peoples of Russia and Ukraine are destined to live as good neighbors.

"The current crisis between our countries will inevitably be overcome. However, it is clear that we will have to restore relations with other, more responsible Ukrainian politicians," it said.

Relations between Kiev and Moscow have been deteriorating since early 2014 over Crimea and eastern Ukraine.

According to the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry, the two former Soviet neighbors have either suspended or terminated 44 out of 451 bilateral treaties between April 2014 and April 2018.
