SRINAGAR, Indian-controlled Kashmir, May 11 (Xinhua) -- A policeman was killed Friday after militants attacked a police post in restive Indian-controlled Kashmir, police said.

The policeman was attacked at Soibugh in Budgam district, about 26 km south of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

"Militants today attacked a police post in Wardwan at Soibugh Budgam. The attack was successfully repulsed and a policeman was critically wounded," a police spokesman said. "All arms and ammunition are safe."

Police said the wounded policeman was immediately sent to hospital, but doctors declared him dead.

So far no militant outfit has claimed responsibility for the attack.

A guerilla war is going on between militants and Indian troopers stationed in the region since 1989. However, of late Indian policemen too have been trained to fight the guerillas.

Kashmir, the Himalayan region divided between India and Pakistan, is claimed by both in full. Since their independence from Britain, the two countries have fought three wars, two exclusively over Kashmir.
