SYDNEY, May 16 (Xinhua) -- Police are investigating an incident in Australia's Victoria state capital Melbourne where a rental bicycle thrown from a bridge hit a moving train and caused about 300,000 Australian dollars (224,264 U.S. dollars) in damages, authorities said on Wednesday.

No one was injured in the incident late last month but the train was "extensively damaged," Victoria police said in a statement.

The oBike rental bicycle was thrown from a footbridge and damaged equipment connecting the train to power lines, with the cables also damaged, local media quoted rail operator Metro Trains as saying.

"The Glen Waverley train line has been thrown into chaos after a power failure caused a train to stop before Flinders Street. Commuters were stuck onboard for more than an hour," the 7 News Melbourne news channel reported.

Local authorities including community councils in New South Wales state capital Sydney have been rolling out measures to cope with the rising numbers of rental bicycles, amid the expansion of companies offering the dockless mode of transport in major cities, such as impounding abandoned bikes.
