SEOUL, May 25 (Xinhua) -- Top diplomats of South Korea and the United States had phone talks Friday over the cancelled summit between the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) and the United States, Seoul's foreign ministry said on Friday.

South Korean Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha had a phone conversation earlier in the day with U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to share situations on U.S. President Donald Trump's cancellation of the DPRK-U.S. summit and make an in-depth discussion over future measures.

Trump said in a letter to the DPRK that "it is inappropriate" to hold the planned DPRK-U.S. summit on June 12 in Singapore citing the "tremendous anger and open hostility" shown in the DPRK's recent statements.

However, Trump noted that he looked "very much" forward to meeting the DPRK leader "some day."

Pompeo told Kang that the U.S. side had a firm willingness to continue dialogue with the DPRK, vowing to continue efforts for creating conditions for the DPRK-U.S. dialogue.

After Trump's announcement, Kim Kye Gwan, the DPRK's first vice foreign minister, was quoted by the official Korean Central News Agency as saying his country was ready to sit down for talks with Washington anytime.

Kim Kye Gwan said Trump's decision does not conform to the international community's aspiration for peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and in the whole world.

The South Korean foreign minister told the U.S. state secretary that Seoul and Washington should make all efforts to maintain the hard-won opportunity for dialogue with the DPRK as President Trump also expressed his will to open a door to dialogue with the DPRK.

Kang and Pompeo agreed to closely communicate with each other while stably managing situations on the Korean Peninsula.
