UNITED NATIONS, June 29 (Xinhua) -- The UN Security Council on Friday adopted a resolution to extend until July 13 the mandate of the African Union-United Nations operation in Darfur of Sudan.
In a unanimous move, the council renewed the mandate of the African Union-United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur, or UNAMID.
The text also urged UNAMID to continue to deter any threats against itself and its mandate.
The council decided to remain seized of the matter.
UNAMID, headquartered in El Fasher, North Darfur, was formally established by the Security Council on July 31, 2007, through the adoption of resolution 1769.
Its mandate includes protecting civilians, facilitating the delivery of aid, mediating between the government of Sudan and non-signatory armed movements, and supporting the mediation of community conflict.
