BUDAPEST, Sept. 22 (Xinhua) -- A total of 262 organizations have applied for programs to be held under the EU's European Mobility Week, which lasted from Sept. 16 to 22 with the World Car Free day, according to official sources here.

This is the 17th time for Hungary to take part in the event.

"Most of the municipalities organized community programmes including sporting events with a focus on families, in the framework of the European Mobility Week, a European Commission initiative," according to the official site of the Hungarian government.

The events promoted and informed several ways with which Hungarians could contribute to a more eco-friendly environment, such as the decrease of usage of electricity, the omission of plastic bags, the selective gathering of household waste, the lesser use of potable water, the less consummation of meat and also avoiding "fast fashion", ie buying clothes out of hype for short periods.

Hungary joined the initiative announced by the European Union in 2000 one year later, in 2001. On this day, people are asked to use public transport, bicycle and on foot.

European Mobility Week, held each year between Sept. 16 and 22, aims to encourage local authorities to introduce and promote sustainable forms of transport and call public attention to alternative transport options.

Budapest transport authority BKK presented its past achievements in the field, as well as already available and planned alternative forms of transport. The company operates hybrid and fully electrical vehicles as well.

A series of events helped to attract attention to the importance of a clean and livable city, the most famous avenue of the capital, Andrassy Ut, has been closed from the cars in order to present events promoting mass transit, cycling and walking.
