JAKARTA, Sept. 24 (Xinhua) -- The World Surf League is looking for holding a world's surfing championships in Indonesia in several months ahead, top official of the league disclosed.

Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Maritime Luhut Binsar Panjaitan met with the World Surf League officials in New York on Sunday evening at the sideline of his visit to the United States, according to a statement from the ministry issued on Monday.

During the meeting, chief strategy officer of the league Joe Carr and general manager of the league for the planned tournament Graham Stapelberg delivered a plan to hold tournaments in several surfing areas in Indonesia.

To pave the holding of the world's class sport event, Stapelberg insisted on collaborating with the Indonesian government.

"We think it necessitates to join hand with the government (in determining) not only tourism sport areas for the competition but also the beaches which have not been popular, by far," he said in the statement.

The World Surf League logs the biggest market in Australia and the United States with a total of two million spectators, according to Stapelberg.

According to the plan, the tournaments is scheduled to be played in Lombok Island and Nias Island in September next year, according to the League.

Minister Luhut welcomed the plan, pledging to help the establishment of the sport event in the country, a vast archipelago nation with over 17,500 islands.

Luhut asserted that the holding of the planned tourney would help paving the government efforts in advancing tourism sector.

"This is a good idea, this planned world class surfing tournament will embolden recurrent tourism promotion," Luhut asserted.

On the places which are possible to play the event, particularly those which have not been popular, Minister Luhut said that the government has already constructed supporting facilities.

The event, Luhut cited, could be a session for the government to find out talented home ground surfers for competing in other world's class tournament.
