TIRANA, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) -- The Albanian side of Ohrid Lake is proposed to be included in the UNESCO World Heritage and World Heritage List, Albanian Telegraphic Agency reported on Thursday.
According to the proposal, the part includes all of the Albanian part of Ohrid Lake, the Lin Peninsula, the north coast of the Macedonian border, and Drilon's springs with streams linking them to Ohrid Lake.
In September, a team from UNESCO completed an evaluation visit for the file submitted by Albania in February this year. The decision is expected to be taken in June 2019 at the annual meeting of the UNESCO Committee.
Lake Ohrid straddles the mountainous border between southwestern Macedonia and eastern Albania. It is one of Europe's deepest and oldest lakes, preserving a unique aquatic ecosystem that is of worldwide importance, with more than 200 endemic species. The importance of the lake was further emphasized when it was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1979.
