TEGUCIGALPA, Dec. 18 (Xinhua) -- More than 7,200 Honduran migrants heading for the United States as part of Central American migrant caravans have voluntarily returned to their country, an official source said Tuesday.
The government is offering returnees land transportation and other services, said the office of Liza Medrano, head of the Foreign Affairs Ministry's office for the Protection of Honduran Migrants.
The first of the caravans departed on Oct. 13 and attracted thousands of other would-be asylum seekers as it made its way north through Mexico.
Some 2,500 migrants still stay along the U.S.-Mexico border, hoping to cross it, whether legally or illegally.
Mexico on Tuesday announced it was working with the United States to boost investment in Central America and southern Mexico in a bid to bring jobs to the region and curb mass migration.
