CHANGSHA, Dec. 29 (Xinhua) -- The main building of a historical hotel was integrally moved northward by 35.56 meters on Friday in central China's Hunan Province without any demolition work.
The displacement work of the 64-year-old Xiangjiang Hotel started on Wednesday on Zhongshan Road in Changsha, capital of Hunan Province.
The hotel, built in 1954, is the first hotel in the province that opened to foreign visitors after the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949. The three-story main building which was built with red bricks and encaustic tiles has been viewed as architecture with high historical and cultural value.
To better protect the architecture, Changsha authorities had decided to displace the building. The construction area of the displaced main building covers about 3,800 square meters, and the overall weight of the building totals about 5,000 tonnes.
With the help of the latest building monolithic movement technology and building reinforcement technology, the main building of the hotel was successfully moved northward by 35.56 meters after 40 hours of effort, according to the construction companies, including China Machinery International Engineering Design and Research Institute Co. Ltd., College of Civil Engineering of Hunan University, Shandong Jianzhu University, and Hunan Daxing Reinforcement and Reconstruction Engineering Co. Ltd.
After the displacement, the hotel will undergo renovation, the constructors said.
