GAZA, Feb. 6 (Xinhua) -- A Palestinian prisoner from the Gaza Strip, who spent 28 years in Israeli jails, died on Wednesday in his cell due to medical negligence, said the Palestinian Commission of Detainees and Ex-Detainees Affairs.
The commission, which is part of Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), said in an urgent press statement that Fares Baroud, a 51-year-old resident of Gaza, died shortly after he was taken from Ramon Prison to an Israeli hospital.
The statement said that the reasons that led to the death of Baroud "are still unclear," adding "however, he was medically neglected by the Israeli Prisons Services over the past few years and didn't get the proper medical treatment."
The commission held the administration of the Israeli prison of Ramon and the Israeli government responsible for the death of Baroud, adding that the number of prisoners who died in Israeli prisons went up to 209 since 1967.
Baroud was arrested in March 1991 and was sentenced to life imprisonment for killing an Israeli settler in the Gaza Strip.
More than 6,000 Palestinian prisoners are serving different terms of sentences in Israeli jails and detentions, who were all arrested and sentenced for carrying out attacks against Israel.
