TOKYO, March 25 (Xinhua) -- The organizers of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games on Monday revealed the relay torch for the Paralympics with a design inspired from Japan's iconic cherry blossoms and the uses of Braille text.
Similar in the design with the Olympic torches, the Paralympic version also bears the motif of "sakura" cherry blossoms, Japan's most familiar and best-loved flower, and heralds the arrival of the country's cherry blossom season in March 2020.
With a length of 710mm and weight of 1.2kg, the torch constitutes a central column with five petal-shaped attachments which resemble a Japanese traditional "Sakuramon" cherry blossom emblem, according to the Olympic organizers.
Thirty percent of the aluminum used in the torch came from material recycled from temporary housing in the devastated northeastern Japanese prefectures in the 2011 earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disaster.
While the Olympic torch employs the color of "sakura gold", the Paralympic torch uses "sakura pink", according to the organizing committee.
As an effort to showcase the Paralympic relay theme of "share your light", Braille text is added to indicate the torch's front for people with visual impairments.
The 2020 Paralympic torch relay will take place between August 13 and 25, 2020 during the transition period between the Olympic Games and the Paralympic Games, according to the organizers.
