        India issues health advisory as heat wave continues

        NEW DELHI, June 4 (Xinhua) -- The Indian government has issued a health advisory for people to stay safe in view of the intense heat-wave conditions prevailing in some parts of the country.

        "Heat-waves can cause adverse effects on human health, including other sectors," the advisory issued by the Ministry of Health said late on Monday evening.

        The Health Ministry suggested the "do's and don'ts" for the citizens to follow, for instance, it advised people to stay indoors and in shaded places, use umbrella, cap or towel when outside, wear thin loose cotton, light-colored garments and frequently drink water and salted drinks such as lassi, lemon water, fruit juices, ORS (Oral Rehydration Solution) and eat fruits such as watermelon, cucumber, lemon and orange.

        It also advised people to avoid drinking alcohol, tea, coffee and carbonated drinks. It also asked people not to go out in the sun, especially between 12:00 and 15:00 hours.

        "Person feeling unwell, especially old aged, young children, pregnant women, those with pre-existing medical conditions, and outdoor workers, should be immediately shifted to a cooler place, put on minimum clothing, be sponged with cold water, applied ice packs wrapped in cloth, and transported to nearest health facility," the advisory said.

        At present, heat wave conditions are prevailing over many states of India. Maximum temperature has crossed the 50 degrees Celsius in the Rasjasthan state's Churu district, whereas it has crossed 46 degrees Celsius in several places in north India, including Delhi.
