CAIRO, Sept. 1 (Xinhua) -- The Arab League (AL) voiced on Sunday its concern over the ongoing military escalation between Israel and Lebanon, stressing "full solidarity" with Beirut in confronting any aggressions.

"AL Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul-Gheit is following up with concern the developments of fire exchange in the border areas between Lebanon and Israel," Egypt's official MENA news agency quoted an AL official as saying.

The official said on condition of anonymity that Aboul-Gheit reaffirmed the Cairo-based pan-Arab body's full solidarity with Lebanon "in confronting any assaults it is subjected to."

The AL chief also warned that military escalation between the two sides "may cause the situation to spiral out of control."

Earlier on Sunday, Lebanon's Hezbollah announced that it destroyed a military vehicle in the Israeli northern town of Avivim, killing and wounding those inside.

Meanwhile, the Israeli army confirmed that missiles had been fired at an Israeli military base and military vehicles, denying any casualties.

Hezbollah's operation prompted Israel to open fire at Maroun al-Ras and Yaroun villages in southern Lebanon.

Aboul-Gheit called for a united political decision in Lebanon, referring to Hezbollah's clashes with Israel, despite the Lebanese government's call for de-escalation.

"The unilateralism of any (Lebanese) side or faction in making fateful decisions related to war is not in favor of the state of Lebanon," the AL chief said, according to MENA.

Backed by Iran, Hezbollah is a strong Shiite political party and military group in Lebanon that fought a deadly war with Israel in 2006.

Tension between Hezbollah and Israel escalated over the past couple of days after Israel launched two drones last week at Hezbollah's targets in southern Beirut.
